PHAST was created in part because we believe that every professional who once was an athlete brings with himself part of that world, along with the desire to improve the life of other athletes as well as the sport as an institution. Therefore, the professional, immersed in a new career, becomes involved and committed to projects that aim to improve the lives and the performance of other athletes, in addition to contributing to the evolution of sports.
Natália F.N. Bittencourt, one of PHAST's founders, had her athletic career interrupted because of an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Later, along with Luciana de Michelis Mendonça, she decided to commit herself and put all her energy into helping and preventing athletes’ injuries. An entire academic career, from undergraduate studies to a Ph.D. degree, dedicated to the study and the development of methodologies to improve function analysis and injury risk profile in order to prevent sports injuries and improve athletes’ lives and performance.
It’s been more than 15 years of scientific contributions, including publications in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the Journal of Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy as well as a workshop presentation during the IOC World Conference on Prevention of Injury and Illness in Sport. All of which has led to a practical and efficient methodology to aid the clinical reasoning necessary for a physiotherapy assessment .
Through the research it was possible to improve the assessment and the application of physiotherapy tests in which the functional and risk profile of the patient's injury is identified, resulting in more effective interventions in order to reduce the probability of injury and to improve performance.
Upon identifying the problems that clubs have with athletes held out by the medical department, as well as the difficulties faced by gyms and fitness consulting companies with absenteeism caused by injury the market demand became clear - a tool capable of solving these problems by compiling the methodology developed on a digital platform. This was the beginning of PHAST.
